Why I Switched to Handmade Soap (And Never Looked Back)

Back to Basics: What Handmade Soap Taught Me About Skincare
A few years ago, I never gave much thought to the soap sitting beside my sink. It was simply part of my daily routine.
As I've gotten older, though, I've become much more mindful about the things I put in and on my body. That curiosity led me down a path I never expected, learning about skincare ingredients, making handmade soap, and discovering how much difference a thoughtfully crafted bar can make.
What started as a hobby quickly became something more. It combined two things I've always loved: science and creativity. And along the way, I noticed something surprising.
My skin changed.
The Difference I Personally Noticed
Everyone's skin is unique, but after switching to handmade soap, I began noticing a few things:
- My skin felt smoother.
- The dry, flaky patches I'd struggled with disappeared.
- My skin felt truly clean without feeling stripped.
- I no longer felt like there was a film or buildup left behind after washing.
It wasn't an overnight transformation, but over time the difference became impossible to ignore.
What Makes Handmade Soap Different?
Handmade cold process soap is created through a traditional soapmaking method that takes time, patience, and careful formulation.
Unlike products that can be made and sold immediately, cold process soap needs to cure for at least four weeks. During that time, excess water evaporates and the bar becomes harder, longer lasting, and gentler to use.
It's certainly not the fastest way to make soap, but it's a process I genuinely enjoy because every batch is crafted with intention from start to finish.
The Ingredients Matter
At Wildthorne Soapery, every recipe starts with ingredients chosen for a purpose.
My handmade soaps feature nourishing oils and butters such as:
- Olive Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Shea Butter
- Mango Butter
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Hemp Seed Oil
- Castor Oil
I also include ingredients like kaolin clay and tussah silk to help create a beautiful, luxurious bar.
Each ingredient contributes something unique to the finished soap, whether that's a creamy lather, a hard long-lasting bar, or a silky feel during use.
A Little Science, A Little Art
One of the things I love most about soapmaking is that it sits perfectly between science and creativity.
There's the science of balancing oils, calculating recipes, and understanding how ingredients interact. Then there's the creative side, choosing fragrances, designing colors and swirls, and creating bars that are as beautiful as they are functional.
Every batch feels a little like a chemistry experiment and a work of art rolled into one.
Soap That Looks as Good as It Feels
Let's be honest, appearance matters too.
One of my favorite things about handmade soap is that no two bars are exactly alike. Each one has its own character, colors, patterns, and personality.
They're the kind of products that look beautiful sitting beside your sink, in your shower, or gifted to someone special.
For me, using handmade soap transforms an ordinary daily task into something that feels a little more intentional.
More Than Skincare
What surprised me most wasn't just what handmade soap did for my skin.
It was how it changed the way I approach self-care.
Taking the time to create products from scratch, carefully selecting ingredients, and allowing each batch to cure for weeks has taught me the value of slowing down. In a world that often feels rushed, soapmaking reminds me that some things simply can't be hurried.
Good things take time.

Arthor Bio
Hi, I'm Stacy, the founder and maker behind Wildthorne Soapery. For 20 years, I've worked as a registered nurse, caring for others while balancing life as a wife and mother. What began as a simple hobby to relieve stress unexpectedly opened the door to a world of creativity, craftsmanship, and ingredient knowledge that completely changed how I think about self-care.
Soapmaking quickly became the perfect blend of science and art by combining my love of learning with the joy of creating something beautiful by hand. As I began paying closer attention to the things I put in and on my body, I discovered firsthand how thoughtfully crafted products could make a difference in my daily routine.
The name Wildthorne reflects the feeling this journey has given me. Like a rose thorn, it catches your attention and awakens your senses, while "wild" speaks to the sense of wonder, discovery, and connection to nature that inspired this business. The wagon wheel found throughout my branding is a tribute to my parents and the cherished memories of gathering around the wagon wheel light fixture that hung above our family table. It serves as a reminder that the things we create with care often become the things we treasure most.
Today, every product at Wildthorne Soapery is rooted in nature, crafted with care, and made with the hope of helping others slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy the beauty found in simple things.
